Due to technology and medical advances in veterinary medicine, we are able to offer health care to our pets like no other time before us. There are all kinds of specialties from ER, dermatology, oncology, cardiology, ophthalmology, dentistry, integrative, etc (almost as many specialties as in human medicine). Sometimes we take our pets to all or none and there’s really nothing left that can be done, it’s all about quality of life. This is where hospice or palliative care comes in.

What does that mean? It means that we know that the inevitable is around the corner, but our pet still has spark in their eyes and the spirit of a lion so we manage pain and appetite. Palliative care offers a smoother transition before it’s time to say good-bye. There are no cures at this point, just making the time we have left with our pets more meaningful and valuable to both parties. It can mean acupuncture and laser therapy to decrease pain and inflammation. It can be homemade diets so your pets are actually enjoying their last meals. Sometimes they’re dehydrated from years of chronic kidney failure and need a boost of either fluids intravenously or subcutaneously.

Whatever it is that they need at the moment, I will offer it. I will work with you through the tough journey and be your guide and helping hand, but I will also remind you if you are waiting too long. This is my oath to these sacred animals and to be honest with you when no one is.
